Between monumental peaks and valleys covered in greenery, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park is one of those places that takes your breath away even before the first trail. Located in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, between the municipalities of Teresópolis, Petrópolis, Guapimirim and Magé, the park houses one of the largest networks of trails in the country. There are more than 200 Km, at all levels of difficulty, connecting forests, rivers, waterfalls and viewpoints with breathtaking views. The classic Petrópolis-Teresópolis crossing is a 30 Km trekking experience crossing high-altitude fields and cloud forests, revealing landscapes of pure grandeur.
The mountainous landscape is marked by rock formations sculpted by time, transforming the park into one of the main climbing areas in Brazil. In total, there are more than 130 routes, with the highlight being Pedra do Sino (2,275 m high), the highest point. A symbol of Brazilian mountaineering, Dedo de Deus rises like a giant stone pointing to the sky, one of the park’s most iconic attractions. But it’s just the beginning! Peaks like Agulha do Diabo and the challenging Escalavrado (1,406 m high) are the setting for unforgettable journeys.
For those who prefer more tranquil activities, the park also offers short trails, crystal-clear waterfalls, stunning viewpoints, and leisure areas perfect for family picnics. A sanctuary of Atlantic Forest, its biodiversity is impressive: more than 2,800 species of plants and hundreds of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. With good infrastructure, signage, mountain shelters, and visitor centres, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park is an invitation to slow down, take a deep breath, and be enchanted by nature in its most imposing and inspiring form.
When to go
The park can be visited year-round. Between April and October, the weather is usually drier, with clear skies and great for hiking, trekking, climbing, and observing the landscapes. Summer (December to March) is rainier and hotter.
How to get there
The park has three main locations with different access routes:
Opening Hours
Tuesday to Sunday (closed on Mondays)
Teresópolis Branch – 7 AM to 4 PM (departures until 5 PM)
Guapimirim Branch – 8 AM to 4 PM (departures until 5 PM)
Petrópolis Branch – 7 AM to 4 PM (departures until 5 PM)
The Serra dos Órgãos was one of the first national parks in Brazil to offer mountain shelters, marked trails, and visitor centres with educational infrastructure. This made it a benchmark for the development of national ecotourism, being one of the most sought-after destinations for those seeking sustainable experiences connected to nature.

The name “Serra dos Órgãos” comes from the resemblance of the rock formations to the organ pipes of European churches. Portuguese colonists thought the peaks resembled instruments used in religious ceremonies, and the name stuck. The famous Finger of God is the best-known icon of this “stone orchestra.”

With over 460 recorded bird species, the park is one of the Atlantic Forest’s birdwatching hotspots. There are even accessible trails ideal for those traveling with binoculars and wanting to do birdwatching tourism.
