Amid the fast-paced rhythm of the capital of Espírito Santo, Fonte Grande State Park emerges as a true oasis of nature and tranquility in Vitória. One of the largest urban remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil, the park offers a refreshing break from city life, with immersive trails, rest areas, picnic spaces, and viewpoints revealing spectacular panoramic views. Walking while listening to birds singing and feeling the cool forest breeze is a truly transformative experience.
With 218 hectares of protected forest, the park is home to six springs, rich biodiversity, and lush vegetation at different stages of regeneration. The trails are well signposted and vary in difficulty, welcoming both casual visitors and ecotourism enthusiasts. In addition, the four official viewpoints — Mochuara, Sumaré, Recanto da Floresta, and Mirante da Cidade — serve as natural observation platforms, offering 360-degree views of the landscape.
More than just a green area, Fonte Grande State Park is also a space for education, citizenship, and memory. Created in 1986 following a tragedy caused by deforestation and irregular occupation on the slopes of the Central Massif, the park represents an important environmental and social achievement. Through its Environmental Education Center, the park welcomes students, community groups, and tourists for sensory experiences and interpretive trails that highlight the importance of urban forests for quality of life, safety, and the sustainability of the city of Vitória.
When to visit
Fonte Grande State Park can be visited year-round, but each season offers different experiences. During spring and summer (September to March), higher temperatures and humidity enhance the lush green landscape of the Atlantic Forest. This is the best period for those who enjoy sunny days, outdoor walks, and clear views from the park’s viewpoints. During autumn and winter (April to August), temperatures are milder, making the trails more pleasant for those who prefer hiking in cooler weather. In the mornings, it is common to find mist around the viewpoints, adding a special charm to the landscape.
How to get there
The park is located in the Central Massif of Vitória. Access is possible by private car or on foot, and there are two main entrances:
Opening hours
Tuesday to Sunday: 8 AM to 5:30 PM | Closed on Mondays for maintenance | Access to the viewpoints closes at 4:40 PM.

Mirante da Cidade (City Viewpoint) is one of the favorite places for locals and visitors to watch the sunset. In the late afternoon, the sky above the capital fills with golden, orange, and lilac tones, while the light reflects over the sea and the city’s buildings. A truly natural spectacle — free and unforgettable.

With a great variety of species, the park is an excellent location for birdwatching. Birds such as tanagers, hummingbirds, red tanagers, black-billed toucans, and even owls can be seen along the trails, especially in the early morning hours. A pair of binoculars and a bit of patience reveal vibrant nature — even so close to the city.
