In Brasilia, a city globally renowned for its modern architecture and urban design, there is also a natural refuge that surprises both visitors and residents: Brasilia National Park, also known simply as “Água Mineral”. Just a few minutes from the city center, this sanctuary of the Brazilian cerrado protects freshwater springs, ecological trails, natural pools, and a rich, unique biodiversity.
The park is an ideal space to relax, breathe fresh air and explore nature without having to leave the city. Trails of varying difficulty levels, such as those in the Cristal Água system, invite hiking and cycling amidst the preserved biome. Crystal-clear natural pools offer a refreshing dip amid native vegetation. For those seeking wellness, guided experiences such as forest bathing provide a deep connection with the natural environment.
With attentive observation, visitors may spot capybaras, giant anteaters, capuchin monkeys, and birds such as the blue-and-yellow macaw. The park is home to over 1,000 animal species, including rare butterflies, birds with vibrant plumage, curious small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. It’s one of the most biodiverse places in the Brazilian Mid-West region, a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife photographers alike.

Few realize it, but within Brasilia National Park runs an old route of the Santa Luzia – Contagem Royal Road, used during the colonial period to transport gold. Today, cyclists and walkers follow these historic paths, experiencing the cerrado on two wheels amidst landscapes that blend nature, history, and freedom. Part of this route is open to visitors along the historical circuit. A must-do excursion!
The park’s main attraction is its natural pools. Springs from the water table and aquifers that emerged during the construction of Brasilia gave rise to Pedreira Swimming Pool and later Areal Swimming Pool. These pools are fed by underground aquifers, with water naturally filtered through cerrado rock formations. The result? Refreshing dips in pure mineral water – a rare experience for those who want to connect with nature without giving up comfort.
