Hearing, even from a distance, the powerful sound of a waterfall breaking the silence of the forest is the first sign that something remarkable is about to appear. Gradually, the vegetation opens to reveal a breathtaking scene: 144 meters of water plunging between green-covered cliffs, creating a mist that dances with the wind and resembles smoke. This is the striking first impression of Cachoeira da Fumaça State Park, located in the municipality of Alegre, in the southern region of Espírito Santo. It is a natural spectacle that deeply moves those who experience it.
Nature has carefully shaped every detail of the park, transforming it into a refuge for those seeking reconnection. Visitors can cool off in the currents of crystal-clear streams, enjoy a picnic to the sound of flowing water, explore accessible and interpretive trails through restored forests and panoramic viewpoints, or simply sit on a rock along the riverbank and let nature do the rest. The Atlantic Forest’s fauna and flora are present everywhere: bromeliads, fig trees, jacarandas, as well as animals such as otters, pacas, ocelots, and countless species of birds. Each turn along the park’s paths offers a new opportunity for discovery.
The park also pulses with the energy of the surrounding communities, who help care for, protect, and share the stories of this place. A visit to Cachoeira da Fumaça is a complete experience of deep connection with the land, with water, and with what is most essential in life: the balance between contemplation and conservation. It is a place where Espírito Santo demonstrates, with all its strength, that natural beauty and hospitality always go hand in hand.
When to visit
The park can be visited year-round, but January and February are considered the best months for those who want to enjoy the full experience. During this period, the water volume of the waterfall increases significantly, making the spectacle of the “smoke” even more impressive. In addition, the water temperature becomes more pleasant for swimming in the park’s rivers and pools. This is also when local fauna and flora activity is at its peak, making the trails especially rewarding for nature observation. During the dry season (May to September), the water flow tends to decrease, but the milder weather favors hiking and contemplation, with less rain and firmer trails.

Before being designated as a Conservation Unit, much of the park area was occupied by degraded pastures. Today, thanks to reforestation efforts with native Atlantic Forest species, the area is home to 222 plant species, including fig trees, bromeliads, heliconias, and jacarandas. It is an inspiring example of environmental restoration.
The park has increasingly attracted cycling enthusiasts, thanks to the good road infrastructure in the surrounding area and its challenging terrain. It is common to see groups of cyclists arriving at the park entrance by bike, especially on sunny weekends. The combination of sport and nature is part of the region’s atmosphere.
The rural communities around the park keep traditions alive, including handicrafts made from straw, clay, and wood, as well as the production of homemade sweets, cheeses, breads, and coffee. For many families in the region, the park also provides additional income, whether through the sale of local products or by working as environmental guides for visitors. Tourism there is also a cultural and social driving force
